Excerpts:

29th Street at Bodija Estate was far from quiet, thanks to the noisy party going on in one of the houses on the normally quiet neighbourhood.  The sitting room of a beautiful five-bedroom detached house was the heart of the party. In all, there were about fifty boys and girls.  Most of the girls were dressed in tight fitting clothes that revealed virtually everything, while most of the boys were in jeans and T-shirts.

It was just getting dark outside, but the sitting room was well lit with multi- coloured bulbs. Anne looked around her. The smell and fumes coming from burning cigarettes were almost unbearable. She was sitting alone in a corner, waiting for John who had gone to get some drinks.

They had only danced twice.  The dancing floor was over crowded.  Anne could see bodies swinging to Michael Jackson’s latest release. She tried to listen to the words of the song without much success.  The rhythm was great, anyhow.

Anne felt a gentle tap on her shoulder and turned round.  Standing beside her was a tall, muscular boy, wearing a T-shirt so tight that it was a wonder it contained his rippling muscles.

“Hey, pretty lady, wanna dance?”

He had a nice smile too.  John was nowhere in sight and the music was great. “Why not?”

They moved on to the crowded floor and the muscular boy got some space quickly. No one would want to bump into him accidentally. Soon, Anne realized he was not a bad dancer. In fact he was good. He moved well for his size and she tried to keep up. Her partner had a habit of clapping and dancing which drew other people’s attention.

John arrived with the drinks and wondered where Anne had gone. He soon sighted her with King Kong! He knew he would have to wait patiently for the song to end.  The song ended, but it was followed by a slow dancing number. Before you could say ‘Lionel Richie’, King Kong had his arms around Anne! Anne was stupefied.  Weren’t you supposed to ask before doing something like that? She thought.

The young man had his eyes closed, oblivious of every thing else.  Anne was most uncomfortable.  She was not the only uncomfortable one.  John was boiling with anger. He

though of going over to stop them, but the size of King Kong’s biceps convinced him otherwise. Besides, what if Anne didn’t mind? John shuddered.  He had not got Anne committed to him in any way. What if she looked on him as a casual friend?  John was tapping King Kong’s arm before he realized he had moved at all!

“Thanks pal, I’d like to have my girl back, if you don’t mind,”

King Kong opened his eyes and starred at John.  Here goes the cracker! John braced himself.

Surprisingly, King Kong smiled and let go of Anne.

“Sorry. Didn’t know she was hooked,”

John couldn’t believe his ears.  He grabbed Anne and held her tightly.  Anne was laughing.

“Was that your boyfriend?” he asked

Anne laughed louder. She said nothing.

It was time to cool the tempo of the party. The D.J. was now playing slow numbers and someone dimmed the lights. Suddenly, there were some activities on one side of the dancing hall. Anne could see that a projector was being used to play a video on one of the four walls of the sitting room.

Curious, she looked closer. To her surprise, it was a pornographic video.

Anne was embarrassed.  She looked around cautiously.  All eyes were glued to the wall. She looked at John. He was watching the images on the wall with keen interest too. She tried not to look, but curiosity got the better of her. A few minutes later she felt John’s hands exploring her body.

“John!”  Anne protested, surprised.

John wasn’t deterred. Suddenly, he kissed her. Anne gently pushed him back.

“Can we sit down for a while?” She asked and made her way out of the dancing floor without waiting for his response.

The gentle evening breeze stroked Anne’s face. She was sitting beside John in John’s mother’s car, a white Honda Civic, 1982 model, which they had driven to the party.  John drove the car gently from the busy high way into the quiet road leading to the GRA. They were on their way back home.

Anne’s heart was pounding. She liked John or maybe she even loved him, but he hadn’t told her how he felt about her.  What if he had another girl, or even other girls back in Lagos?  The car was slowing down.  John parked off a major road and turned off the ignition.  He stared straight ahead, not saying any thing.  It was a beautiful night. The stars shone bring in the sky.

“Anne, I don’t know how to say this, but I think I’m falling in love with You’.  John spoke slowly without looking at her. Anne was quiet.

“I’ve never felt this way before,” John continued. “I don’t want to make a fool of myself.  Do you feel anything for me, Anne?”

“I don’t know. I like you, but,

“Is there someone else?”

“No.”

“I want you to be mine, Anne.  Just the two of us.   You know what I’m saying”.

Anne laughed. “You know what I’m saying?” She mimicked. John laughed too. ‘Well, is that a yes?

Anne smiled teasingly. “What do you think?”

John didn’t bother giving a reply.  He reached out for her and gave her a long kiss.

Elsewhere, about the same time, Mary was in deep trouble.  She had left the party earlier with her friend, Taiye and two boys, Chucks and Bola. Chucks was Taiye’s boyfriend and Bola was Chuck’s friend.  It was obvious that

Bola was interested in dating her.  She didn’t mind that.  What bothered her was that Bola seemed to think he was ‘Mr. Universe’. He was handsome all right, and she wasn’t bad looking herself.  Maybe girls were falling over themselves to date him.  Big deal!  Boys were falling over themselves to date her too!  Taiye, Chucks and Mary were students at the University of Lagos, while Bola was at the University of Ibadan.  Earlier on, at the party, Mary had told Anne and John that Chucks would bring her home.  John had been delighted.  It was obvious he wanted some time alone with Anne.

Mary had gone off with the other three and here they were, at Chuck’s house. They were in Chuck’s bedroom where Chucks and Bola were examining some white powdery substance, which Chucks referred to as Cocaine! Mary was scared.  She had known Chucks back at school but she could never have guessed that he was into Cocaine.  His father was into some business and was apparently wealthy.  Chucks drove his own car at school!

“Don’t be a spoilt sport, Taiye, come on, give it a try,”

Chuck’s eyes were glazed. He looked funny and he slurred as he spoke.

From the way Taiye was giggling, Mary suspected she wasn’t a stranger to what was going on.
