Excerpts:
When Lamberto Amato, legal counsel to the Dini family sauntered into his office in his flashy American tailored suit, Captain Giallo knew he wasn’t paying a courtesy call. Amato was expensive and normally he would send an associate to handle police matters.
“To what do I owe this honour?” Captain Giallo said rising to shake hands with the successful counsel Amato was not given to small talk. He hated visiting Police offices
but he didn’t have a choice today. Georgeo Dini, head of the Dini family had insisted on a personal touch. “I will come to the point Captain. I am lodging a formal complaint against David Rossi, one of your officers. My sources tell me that he has links with the African prostitute, Margaret, which you want for questioning regarding the hotel killing.”
“Hotel killing?” Captain Giallo spread his hands helplessly. “I don’t quite understand.”
“The over dose of Cocaine,”
“Ah, that. May I ask why you are interested in the case sir?”
Amato waived his hands impatiently. “The dead girl was an associate of Mr Dini. She was under his protection. You know how it is. Mr Dini has to do something about the unfortunate incident. “I see,” Captain Giallo winced. He wanted no part of Georgeo Dini at all.
“So what evidence do you have to support your allegation against Mr Rossi?”
Amato reached into the inner pocket of his flashy navy blue suit and brought out a photograph and threw it on Giallo’s table. Captain Giallo could see a lady in the photograph. “Vittorio Emanuele was arrested by David Rossi about eighteen months ago for attempting to assault an African prostitute. Vittorio had picked her up to shoot a pornographic video. David Rossi’s report of the arrest deliberately left out the name of the prostitute. Another prostitute was in fact picked up to replace the real one,
“The girl happens to be the same one you want for questioning. Your Mr Rossi chose not to bring the girl in because he didn’t want her deported. Your Mr Rossi was being paid by Edwina keep her girls out of your way.
Captain Giallo ran his hands through what was left of his hair
“May I ask you how you came about this information?”
“You may,” Amato replied smiling.
He reminded Giallo of a Snake he had seen somewhere as she walked to the door and pulled it open. Standing outside the door was a pot bellied balding fellow with bulging eyes. In his dirty yellow tracksuit, he didn’t look like the sort of company Amato should keep.
“Vittorio Emanuele?” Amato announced. He will corroborate all that I have said.
Captain Giallo rose from his seat with a scowl on his face.
“You will have to put all these in writing of course.” he pointed out.
Amato pulled out a wad of papers from his pocket. “It’s all here.
“Ah, then we will take Mr Emanuele’s statement.
He could see Vittorio wince at the thought of having to make a statement. No criminal would relish the thought of giving evidence to incriminate a police officer and the fact that the officer was David Rossi, one of the best loved officers in the Lambandi again made the matter much more precarious. Vittorio probably knew he would be in
prison before the month was over as sure as he knew his name. “Mr Vittorio will be glad to cooperate with you.” Amato announced with another smile. The purpose of the statement was clear to everyone. Vittorio had to choose between being hounded down by the police and being hounded down by the Dini family. It didn’t take Vittorio a long time to decide. He smiled weakly at Captain Giallo. He would take his chances with the police.

Officer Guissepe, was about six months old in the Italian Police Force. He wore his uniform with pride. Always neatly dressed, he believed he would one day become the police Chief. Short and well built, he never agreed that he was fat, he raised himself from the pillow on the driver’s seat of the police van so he could have a better view of the road.
Although he was driving rather fast, he didn’t want any accident that would delay him from getting to the Airport on time. He had a date with a pretty blond in his neighbourhood and he had no intention of getting there late. His heart had sunk when Deputy Chief Nolan had announced that he was to take the pretty African lady to the Airport. There was no need for an armed guard. They knew the lady was the one that had more or less insisted that she wanted to be deported!
Ten minutes later, Guissepe bounced the van into the Airport, Margaret in tow, and headed straight for the departure lounge. The five other African ladies were waiting with Italian immigration officials. It was then that Guissepe realized that he had forgotten Margaret’s deportation order at the police headquarters. In his haste, he had mistakenly locked them up in his desk with some other documents. Going back to the office to get the papers was out of the question. He knew he could make it back before take off time but that would mean kissing his date goodbye.
“I forgot the papers at the office,” he explained to the Immigration officer.
“I will go back for it.” he offered knowing fully well that he had no intention of coming back.
As far as Guissepe was concerned, the important thing was that the Lady was being deported. The reason was immaterial. Personally, he wasn’t too pleased about the large number of African immigrants in Italy. If he had his way, he would round them all up and deport them the same day! As he walked away from the immigration desk, he smiled to himself. He was confident that the immigration’s officer would simply put Margaret on the plane with or without any deportation order. Good luck to the Nigerian
immigration officers!
