The traffic was light but Tony wasn’t in a hurry. It was Friday evening and he had just closed from work. He drove slowly, almost crawling, as his eyes cased the sides of the road filled with commuters eagerly waiting for a bus or taxi to get them out of the Lagos Island before dark.
Toni, a young lawyer, still single at 30, was on the look out for any beautiful lady he could give a lift. It wasn’t his first time, in fact it had developed into something of a habit. He had discovered that offering girls a lift out of the Lagos Island after working hours was a great way to meet new girls regularly!
But Toni had to be careful. He had learnt to identify prospective targets. You see, he wasn’t interested in even dating not to talk of getting married. All he wanted to do was sow his wild oats. He was interested in sex partners and nothing more and the sooner he could score, the better for him!
It wouldn’t do to pick up married women, religious women or women with scruples. He was a nice guy, so once he got a girl in his car, he couldn’t very well order her out of his car if she didn’t meet his requirements. He would only curse his luck, engage in polite conversation and pray for better luck the next day!
After about 100 meters, he spotted a good prospect. She was about five feet two inches, light-skinned, average good looks but well endowed, just like he liked them. Her short skirt and skimpy blouse suggested that she could be in ‘shopping’ too! He crawled to a stop just by her and gave his best smile.
‘Hi, where are you headed? He asked and was rewarded with a toothy smile. Nice teeth, he thought.
‘I’m going to Surulere,’ she winked. Tony almost growled. He was pleased with himself. His instincts were getting better by the day! He had his girl for the evening. ‘Come on in, sweetness,’ he murmured, leaning over to open the door for her.
As was his custom, Tony offered the girl a drink in his flat and ended up in bed with her! He was however not amused at all when the girl told him that she actually lived at Ejigbo on the outskirts of Lagos!
If he had enough cash on him, he would have driven her to a Bus stop and put her in a cab. Well he didn’t! He had to take her home! He was now irritable as he was tired and quite frankly the thrill was gone. He really wasn’t interested in carrying on a conversation with her either.
The traffic was horrible and it was about 10 O’clock before they got on the lonely road where the girl said she lived.
‘Where do I stop?’ Tony asked relieved
‘Here. Can I have some money?
Tony couldn’t hide his anger
‘Money? I didn’t know you were that kind of girl. He retorted
The girl’s cold and mirthless laughter drew shivers down Tony’s spine. The laughter was the most inhuman he had ever heard in his life! Suddenly, he could feel fear creeping into him inexplicably!
‘You have no idea what sort of a girl I am. I hope for your sake that you don’t find out tonight.
Tony could feel a morbid atmosphere descend inside the car. It had grown rather cold all of a sudden.
‘Look, I really don’t have any money,’ Tony stammered. ‘If I did I would have gotten you a Taxi at Surulere. I’m not playing games.
There was an unholy quiet in the car as the girl fixed her gaze on Tony.
